A short time ago, we returned from Pier 42 (at the end of Montgomery Street), where U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer called on the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. (LMDC) to pay for the construction of an East Side waterfront park and recreational area.
The city has plans to turn the pier into an urban beach and boat launch, but has no money to complete the project. Schumer, appearing with community leaders, urged the LMDC to use federal funds awarded after 9/11 for the pier. We’ll have a more detailed report later.
Incidentally, today’s news conference was co-organized by Schumer and State Senator Daniel Squadron, who represents Lower Manhattan and the Lower East Side. Schumer made a point of praising Squadron, a former aide who helped write “Positively American,” Schumer’s best-selling book. And he congratulated Squadron and his wife, Liz Weinstein, who have their first baby on the way.

Earlier this week we attended a news conference in front of 326-328 East 4th Street, two 170 year old rowhouses that have been the focal point of a passionate preservation debate. The Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation (GVSHP) gathered with elected officials and other neighborhood groups — urging the Landmarks Preservation Commission to protect the Greek Revival structures.
This morning we received an update from GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman: Continue reading Preservationists Lose Battle to Landmark East 4th Street Rowhouses

In September, a piece in the Observer introduced voters of the 64th Assembly District to Sheldon Silver’s newest foe: 28-year old Columbia graduate student Ed Chen. At the time, he was exploring the possibility of running against the powerful Speaker, who has represented Lower Manhattan in Albany since 1976.
This week, Chen officially took the leap, announcing “I have decided to unequivocally declare my intention to run in the 2012 election against Mr. Silver.” Continue reading Chen Makes His Choice: He’s Taking on Sheldon Silver

From "Anchises" at Abrons through Sunday
This weekend is packed with great performances on the Lower East Side. Here are some top picks for events happening in the neighborhood:
- Don’t forget to get your act together and audition for the Lower East Side Talent Showcase. They are seeking singers, actors, dancers, bands, comics, poets, and novelty acts. Auditions will be held this Friday from 6-9pm and Sunday from 3-6pm at Abrons Arts Center - 466 Grand Street.
Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side this weekend:
 Great Elk
GREAT ELK – Saturday, Nov. 20 | 7:30PM at Mercury Lounge
The brains behind Great Elk are Paul Basile and Patrick Hay. Their partnership is not uncommon to bands; Basile provides introspective lyrics, Hay adds texture with strokes of guitar, the rhythm section joins in and before you know it, you have a solid shot of indie-folk with a head bobbing chaser. Thanks to @jeffreylewisish, who sent along this photo showing the ongoing construction at the Slipper Room building on Orchard Street. looks like Orchard (between Stanton and Rivington) will be closed for a few days while the work is completed.

Community leaders came to the Bowery earlier this week, shovels in hand, to celebrate the planting of 37 trees (many of them cherry trees) alongside Confucius Plaza. Continue reading Chinatown’s New Cherry Trees
As we reported yesterday, Community Board 3 has come up with “draft” guidelines for the Seward park redevelopment project. On its web site, CB3 has now posted a power point presentation used in Tuesday night’s SPURA task force meeting. The document was prepared for “discussion purposes” and will be undergoing changes in the days and weeks ahead. If you would like to comment on the guidelines, send an email to spura@cb3manhattan.org. by the end of the day on November 27th. Click here to see CB3′s SPURA page – and then select the top document, “November 16 draft guidelines presentation.”
