Chinatown’s New Cherry Trees

Must Read

Community leaders came to the Bowery earlier this week, shovels in hand, to celebrate the planting of 37 trees (many of them cherry trees) alongside Confucius Plaza.

State Senator Daniel Squadron worked with the Parks Department and neighborhood activists on the initiative. The beautification effort is part of a larger plan to make the Bowery safer and more attractive. Among those attending the event: Parks Commissioner Bill Castro, Confucius Plaza Board President Justin Yu, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association President Jack Eng, Chinatown Partnership head Wellington Chen and CB3’s Susan Stetzer.  Next spring, community leaders are looking forward to holding Chinatown’s first cherry blossom festival.
