Abrons Spotlights Puerto Rican Diaspora

Must Read

This roundup was reported by Kari Jensen.

This fall at Abrons Arts Center, the curatorial focus is on the Puerto Rican diaspora, with installations, presentations and more, including an Indigo Dyeing Workshop with Leila Mattina Gregory, where participants will learn how to use indigo pigment, at the 9th Street Community Garden on Sept. 23. Mattina will also facilitate a seed exchange and share instructions for growing indigo in small spaces.

The “Objects” exhibition also featured Latino and Caribbean stories from NuevaYorkinos, a digital archive.

During an opening event for “Objects of Permanence” on Sept. 6, exhibition curator Mellány Sánchez told guests, “I hope you all feel that there are stories missing and want to tell them more because that’s really what this is — a slice of a dense, rich history that needs more storytelling. The work is really there mostly to inspire you to find similarities between what you’re interested in doing and seeing, and hearing more of and bringing that forward.”

So along those lines, for more inspiration and information, here are some related links:

  • NuevaYorkinos, a digital archival and multimedia project dedicated to preserving ÑYC Latino and Caribbean culture and history through family photographs, videos, and stories. Share your story: Submissions requested here.
  • Tenement Museum x Abrons Arts Center: Why We Collect,” a YouTube video of a panel streamed live from Abrons with Mellány Sánchez, Jessica Gonsalves, co-owner of Lower East Side vintage store Procell, Kathryn Lloyd, vice president, programs and interpretation at the Tenement Museum, and Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, discussing how and why we form collections and the role of garments in community storytelling. (Note: The YouTube video title page is green and states: “Why We Collect Starting Soon.” But there is a long delay before the actual panel discussion begins. To fast forward on a keyboard, press the “3” key to advance to the approx. start. On a mobile device, move the video cursor to about the 13:27 minute mark.)
