In the news this week:

–Big trouble for the owner of 225 Bowery, the former flop house that was converted into a luxury hotel in partnership with the Ace Hotel brand. During the pandemic, the hotel was operated as a homeless shelter. Now arbitrators have ordered the owner/developer (the Omnia Group) to pay Ace $10 million. A lender is looking to foreclose on the property. [The Real Deal]

–Tenants displaced in April when a fire tore through their building on Mulberry Street say it’s taking too long for renovations to be completed. [NY1]

–A Lower East Side man faces charges in connection with making homemade semiautomatic weapons in his apartment. [Gothamist]

–A report from the city comptroller concludes that New York is moving way too slowly in spending federal funds earmarked for post-Hurricane Sandy flood protection. This, of course, includes, the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project. [The City]

–Across the city and especially on the Lower East Side, there seems to be a weed store on every corner. There’s just one problem. The state has not as of yet handed out any licenses for the retail sale of cannabis. [Vox]

–The Lower East Side appetizing institution, Russ and Daughters, is opening a new location at Hudson Yards, which will include a private events space and a caviar and champagne bar. [Eater]

–Restaurant and nightlife venue operators are optimistic about prospects for a robust holiday season, bouncing back from the pandemic. Among them, the owners of Ainslie, the successor to Vandal in a 20,000 square foot space at 199 Bowery. On the other hand, Dumpling Lab in the East Village called it quits just after receiving a Michelin Bib Gourmand award. [New York Post]
