In today’s New York City Election, District 1 City Council member Margaret Chin won a third term, defeating three challengers. She came out ahead of Christopher Marte, a first-time Council candidate who almost scored an upset victory in the Democratic Primary a few weeks ago.

Here are the unofficial results from the Board of Elections.

With 100% of the precincts reporting, Chin has 49.9% (11.468 votes). Marte, running on the Independence Party line, pulled in about 37% (8502 votes). The Republican, Bryan Jung, came in third with just shy of 9% (2,014 votes). Liberal Party candidate Aaron Foldenauer eked out less than 5% (1.013 votes).

In District 2, Democrat Carlina Rivera cruised to an easy victory over four other candidates. She attracted three-quarters of the vote today and is now poised to succeed City Council Rosie Mendez. District 2 covers the area above East Houston Street.

There was also a special election tonight to fill Daniel Squadron’s seat in the 26th Senate District. Brian Kavanagh, a state assemblyman, easily prevailed over his Republican opponent. It was Kavanagh with 85% to Analicia Alexander with less than 15%.

We’ll have a lot more from the election tomorrow on The Lo-Down.
