Talking Bagels, Bialys, and Babka at Abrons Arts Center

Must Read

Alan Phillips and Marom Unger of Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys, will be in conversation with Devra Ferst, co-author of The Jewish Holiday Table, at Abrons Arts Center on February 25th at 7:00pm. The free event is titled, From Yesterday to Tomorrow: Bagels, Bialys, & Babka, and is sponsored by Vintage Thrift Shop.

They write: “[This]…is the final installment in a 5-part series of live interviews spotlighting the enduring legacy and cultural impact of iconic, multigenerational food establishments on New York’s Lower East Side. The series brings audiences face-to-face with the owners who preserve and shape the identity and flavor of one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. Previous participants have included the current proprietors of Katz’s Delicatessen, Economy Candy, The Pickle Guys and Yonah Schimmel’s Knish Bakery.

The event takes place in the Experimental Theater at Abrons Arts Center, located at 466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street). The evening features the two principals of Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys, an enterprise that dates back to 1936. Founded by Isadore Mirsky and Morris Kossar, the bakery arose from a piece of local bread brought by the Jews of Bialystok, Poland. The word “bialy” is actually a shortened version of “Bialystoker Kuchen,” Yiddish for “little bread from Bialystok.”

Each event opens with a brief video featuring archival interviews and footage recorded over the past two decades providing context and reflections before transitioning into a live, one-hour conversation exploring how this local business has grown to capture the taste and imagination of a much wider audience.”

Vintage Thrift Shop is a nonprofit resale boutique supporting charitable initiatives through the sale of curated vintage and gently used items, celebrating community, sustainability, and history.

Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance through the Abrons Arts Center website at From Yesterday to Tomorrow: Bagels, Bialys, & Babka.
