It’s opening day for LiDL at 408 Grand Street on the Lower East Side. The discount grocery chain, based in Germany, took over a former Rite Aid store on the northeast corner of Grand and Clinton streets. Locals started lining up early to take advantage of freebies and discounted bulk items. At one point, the line stretched all the way to Pitt Street. There’s also a union protest outside the store. Several giant inflatable rats and pickets from carpenters unions are there to greet customers.
