The Journal News reports that Streit’s Matzo is working on a deal to move its Lower East Side factory to Rockland County. Co-owner Aaron Gross said the company could not disclose the exact location because all of the details have not yet been worked out.
Streit’s ended its 90-year legacy on the LES earlier this year, selling a cluster of buildings on Rivington Street for $30.5 million to Cogswell Realty. Earlier this week, Curbed published preliminary drawings showing a new six or seven story residential building on the site. The new owner is reportedly trying to purchase air rights from neighboring lots. Streit’s shut down matzo-making operations on Rivington Street after Passover this year, but the retail store has remained open to sell a few remaining products.
An official in Orangetown told the Journal News that Streit’s is focused on a site on Route 303 nears Kings Highway. Another official indicated that the company could receive incentives for moving to Rockland County. Gross said Streit’s Matzo must be out of the Lower East Side buildings by the end of this month.
