A new report shows that the Lower East Side has a fairly high concentration of households with children compared with other Manhattan neighborhoods.

The analysis, conducted by the website Address Report, found that 20% of homes in this neighborhood have at least one child under the age of 18. That makes it the fifth most “kid populous” community. At the top of the list is Battery Park City with 36%, followed by Harlem and Tribeca. No higher than 8% of the households in neighborhoods such as Soho, the Financial District, Gramercy and Hell’s Kitchen have children.

AMNY picked up on the report, observing:

Even the ‘hoods with the most youngsters aren’t exactly youth centers, considering that the national average of households with at least one child under 18 is 31.8%, Hernandez noted. A lack of good, affordable family-friendly housing is one factor behind the statistics, said sociologists. Manhattan is more a place that attracts people in the “family building stage,” said Matthew Weinshenker, an assistant professor of sociology at Fordham.
