After a year-and-a-half out of commission, the escalator at the East Broadway station is running tonight. The MTA shut down the old escalator in June of 2012. Following many delays, local residents and elected officials began making some noise about the situation in recent weeks. A rally was staged outside the station a couple of weeks ago. While many people will be celebrating the opening, locals have launched a broader campaign for a complete revamp of the decaying East Broadway station. You can read about that here.
