Details are beginning to emerge about the safety record of Sky Express bus company and the four women killed in its tragic crash early Tuesday morning on Interstate 95 in Virginia en route from North Carolina to Chinatown.
Most notably, federal Department of Transportation officials acknowledged late yesterday that the crash occurred three days after the intercity discount bus company had been ordered to cease operations but then was granted a 10-day extension (Charlotte Observer, NYT).
Also yesterday, the victims were identified as Karen Blyden-Decastro, 46, of Cambria Heights, N.Y.; Sie Giok Giang, 63, of Philadelphia; Josefa Torres, 78, of Jamaica, N.Y.; and Denny Estefany Martinez, 25, of Jersey City, N.J.
In other news, survivors described the horrific scene to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the Fredericksburg Freelance-Star learns that bus driver and Flushing resident Kin Yiu Cheung, who has been charged with reckless driving and is suspected of sleeping at the wheel, previously lived in Virginia near the crash site, and records there show he had plenty of driving violations on his personal time, too.
