A manhole explosion has shut down Grand Street between Clinton Street and Pitt Street. The explosion occurred near Saint Mary’s Church at 425 Grand Street early yesterday morning due to a fault in a secondary wire that Con Edison was investigating at the time. A Con Edison truck was positioned over the manhole and took the brunt of the damage but large chunks of pavement and debree scattered on the street.
A worker near the passenger side of the truck was shaken up and taken to the hospital in a neck brace, but seemed otherwise to be uninjured. A driver in a car stopped at the stoplight close by had slight damage to his car but was unscathed.
Crews worked overnight on repairing the line.
Local officials note that FDNY operations have concluded, and NYPD is assisting with street closures. Westbound Grand Street has been closed from Pitt Street to Clinton Street and rerouted down East Broadway and across Grand until further notice.
