 Baohaus, 137 Rivington Street.
There’s news today about a couple of Lower East Side restaurants. First, Eddie Huang told Eater and then started blogging about his decision to close his original Baohaus restaurant, at 137 Rivington Street. Huang says he wants to focus on his new 14th Street establishment and was just spread too thin. The restaurant will shut down after Sunday.
Second, Grub Street reports that Iacopo Falai is probably not opening a new trattoria on Clinton Street. He has already closed Falai, his more formal restaurant on Clinton and seems poised to shut Falai Bakery. Here’s how he explained the situation to the food blog:
“I need to sell Falai first,” (he) said, indicating that the other project is up-in-the-air. (A rep e-mailed this morning to say the project isn’t happening.) The toque alluded that he could resurrect Falai restaurant elsewhere. “It’s the cooking I do,” he explained, and he hopes to continue it “in some other form.” The Lower East Side might just not be right anymore: “It’s mostly bars now,” he lamented. “Or people want tapas, small plates. They go out at 10 p.m. — at 10 p.m. Falai was closing.”
Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:
 Abby Ahmad
ABBY AHMAD – Fri, Sep 30 І 7:30PM at Rockwood Music Hall
Abby Ahmad brings a hyper fresh musicality to her songwriting. Blessed with a naturally strong, clear voice, the dexterous Ahmad also has a knack for the feisty, percussive guitar style that leads most of her songs. Not afraid to surprise the listener, Ahmad is happy to break with convention and fill out her arrangements with everything from a trio of thumping field drums to full 60’s-Spy horn sections. Carnival on Pitt St. - photo by Giacinta Frisillo
Thanks to Lo-Down reader Giacinta Frisillo for this lovely picture of the carnival on Pitt Street last night. The event is put on by Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
A new October treat from the Snap Food Truck.
It looks like we’re in for a wet weekend. But here’s something that might lure you outside on Saturday: the all-new “Brat Mi,” being served up from the Snap Food Truck at the Hester Street Fair. Yes you guessed it — they’ve combined a bánh mì and that classic “Oktober” sausage, the brat, to make this new sandwich.
Also being served up at this weekend’s fair: sautéed mushroom tacos at the Bun Mi Catering stall, jalapena pickles from Picklena and sweet treats from FattyCakesNY.
For the full list of food and shopping options at the Hester Street Fair, head on over to their web site.
A message from Community Board 3:
Community Board 3 is looking for locations to hold full board meetings attended by board members and the community. The meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of every month (with rare exceptions for holidays). We need access from 6:00 p.m. to 10 or 11:00 p.m.
The meetings are open and the public is encouraged to attend. We need seating for at least 150 people. The meeting places must be accessible, both by public transportation and wheel chair accessible.
The Community Board very much appreciates any help in suggesting suitable locations within CB 3. The Board also needs a volunteer to staff the door for each meeting from 7:00 pm to closing. The first volunteer is needed for Oct. 31.
The CB formerly held meetings at P.S. 20 and occasionally other schools. However, last year the Dept of Education decided that community boards could no longer use schools free. The District 1 Community Education Council sponsored the CB meetings last year, but are no longer permitted by DOE to do this. The cost of using a school with required security guard is over $200 per use. If you have suggestions, please email info@cb3manhattan.org or call Ed Chan at 212-533-5300 ex 203

Delancey Street, at the Clinton Street crosswalk.
A couple of weeks ago, we reported that local elected officials, community activists and city agencies had formed a “working group” to discuss what to do about Delancey Street, the Lower East Side’s most dangerous thoroughfare. Most everyone involved agreed that a lot could be gained if all of the neighborhood’s stakeholders were able to sit around the table on a monthly basis, coordinating their efforts and comparing notes.
Recently, the team at the LES Business Improvement District (which is participating in the working group) briefed us on a plan they’ve been developing to make Delancey a bit more hospitable to pedestrians. In a previous story, we noted that the Transportation Department expects people to cross the street in two sections. That’s right. You’re supposed to seek refuge in the center island, waiting for a second green light, rather than trying to get all the way across at one time. Yesterday, we wrote about the upcoming public hearing regarding the Seward Park redevelopment project. On October 11th, residents will have the chance to speak out about the “draft scoping document,” the final version of which will guide a comprehensive environmental review on the SPURA site.
The document, released last month, spells out what the city sees as the “maximum” SPURA program. It is their most comprehensive discussion of the project to date. Continue reading CB3 Wants City to Study More Essex Street Market Options

A large crowd gathered alongside the library, snapping photos and marveling at the spectacle. A couple more photos (including a shot of said hawk) after the jump.
