Cyclist Hit By Van at Grand and Norfolk Streets

Police officers interviewed cyclist Tom Sganga after the accident; he sustained minor injuries.

Tom Sganga was riding eastbound on Grand Street around 7 p.m. this evening when, he says, a minivan pulled out of parallel parking spot right into his path.

His leg was hurt in the collision, and the frame of his electric Kysmo bike bent, but mostly, he was just fuming.

Cyclist Struck by Car at Grand & Chrystie

A bicyclist was struck and injured by a car at the intersection of Grand and Chrystie streets at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon. The adult male cyclist, who appeared to be conscious, was taken from the scene to Bellevue Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the car, a silver Dodge Neon with West Virginia plates, was taken into police custody after being questioned, frisked and handcuffed. The victim’s injuries did not appear life-threatening and no charges had been filed as of 4:45 p.m., according to a police spokesperson.

The New York Post says a 14 year old was arrested earlier this week for the April 22 beating and robbery of a man near Essex and Delancey. It happened about 5pm. The suspect, and two accomplices, pummeled the victim and stole his phone. The victim's jaw had to be wired shut. All three suspects were arrested.

About 185,000 New Yorkers pedaled to work in 2008, up 18,000 from 2007. In the past three years NYC has added 620 miles of bike lanes.
