12 Corners Coffee, 155 East Broadway.
A new coffee shop opened this week at 155 East Broadway, just west of Rutgers. It’s called “12 Corners,” and serves Kobrick’s Coffee. The staff is still setting up the small shop, which was once the home of Desserts NYC and before that Flowers Cafe. The owner wasn’t around when we stopped by this afternoon. A Yelp listing indicates the business will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. every day. The interior has been completely revamped; there are several tables set up along the wall and a small counter-area looking out onto East Broadway.

You may have noticed Desserts NYC, the year-old bakery at 155 East Broadway, has been closed of late. Yesterday the shop’s owner, Mary Fitzgerald, posted the following message on Facebook:
As you might have noticed, we have closed. We appreciate your business and will miss seeing all of you! Thanks to all of our faithful customers.
Sorry to see this place go. We profiled Mary in July of 2010. Her baked goods are delicious and the shop was a nice addition to the neighborhood.
Desserts NYC opened May 20 at 155 E. Broadway.
For the last five years, Mary Fitzgerald has baked custom-order sweets for weddings, birthdays and other occasions in a rented commercial kitchen in Long Island City, schlepping her ingredients and finished products hither and thither and relying on word-of-mouth advertising.
Baking evolved from a hobby into a new occupation while Fitzgerald spent two decades working in the fresh flowers industry. Her jobs included a stint at a flower shop on Grand Street, where she was a co-worker with Bill Frazer, who now operates Essex Flowers (which just relocated to Grand Street) and Flowers Café, a small restaurant also on Grand.
