In the news this past week:
–The owner of a residential building on Chrystie Street faces charges after the alleged beating of a homeless man, who was reportedly brandishing pieces of a broken chair. The altercation happened outside the building where Chinatown resident Christina Yuna Lee was murdered in 2022 by a man who followed her home. [New York Post]
–Police are investigating after a dog was found in a trash compactor at the Alfred E. Smith Houses at 180 South St. Due to severe injuries, the dog was euthanized. [Gothamist]
–Bike traffic on Delancey Street is up dramatically. Improvements are coming to, hopefully, address safety on Delancey Street and the Williamsburg Bridge, but those changes won’t be implemented for several years. [Streetsblog]
–A section of Rivington Street is now known as Raphael Sadonte Ward Jr. Way. In 2013, Raphael – 16 years old – was shot and killed near the intersection of Rivington and Columbia streets. His mother founded the Sadonte Foundation to help support young people and reduce gun violence. [EV Grieve]
–Pecking House, famous for its Sichuan chile fried chicken, is expanding beyond Brooklyn, opening a new location at 83 Henry St. [Eater]
