Buildings Evacuated After Elevated Carbon Monoxide Levels Detected

A manhole fire earlier today led to the evacuation of the Hotel on Rivington and several other buildings in the area. The Fire Department reported elevated carbon monoxide levels.

The Post reported that the underground fires were called in at about 10:55 a.m. The evacuations were ordered by 12:30 p.m. Con Ed workers on the scene described the carbon monoxide levels as “very dangerous.”

By the afternoon, the levels were dropping. Traffic was blocked off on Rivington Street, Ludlow Street and part of Essex Street.
