Breaking: Pedestrian Killed On Williamsburg Bridge (Updated)

Police shut down the Williamsburg Bridge this morning after a man was killed. Channel 5 reported that the person killed had been “walking on the bridge.”

Cops are advising motorists to avoid the Brooklyn-bound outer roadway. The accident has caused delays in the B39 bus.

UPDATE 7:40 a.m. Here’s more from Channel 7. The victim is believed to be in his 20s. It’s unclear exactly what happened or what he was doing in the car lanes, but it’s apparent he was struck by a vehicle. The man was found on the eastbound outer roadway and declared dead on the scene.

UPDATE 8:06 a.m. DNA Info reported the unidentified victim was 31. He was found in the roadway at 5:22 a.m.

UPDATE 10:25 a.m. According to the Daily News, “Police believe the man fell or jumped from an elevated structure on the bridge.”

UPDATE 12:19 p.m. The Post reports that the victim was an Austrian tourist.

UPDATE 4:47 p.m. More from the Daily News this afternoon. The man was dressed in a “Clockwork Orange” costume for Halloween. Cops say he was in New York for a wedding and was staying with a relative in Brooklyn.  It’s unclear whether he fell or jumped from an elevated portion of the bridge. An autopsy is being performed.

UPDATE 11/2 More today from the Post: “The costumed out-of-towner had been boozing it up for Halloween, when he accidentally fell from the walkway onto the vehicle lane, law-enforcement sources said. He was then run over, sources said. The driver who struck him was not charged, telling cops he was unaware that he had hit a person.”
