There was a terrible accident in the Bowery train station yesterday afternoon. It happened at about 5:30 p.m. when a man was struck by the J Train.
According to the Daily News, he either leaned in to far or fell into the path of the subway car as it headed north. Police do not believe he was pushed. The victim, who has not been identified, was declared dead at Beth Israel Hospital.
Our friend Linda Adams was in the station when the accident happened (see her tweet posted above). She said passengers “ran out and pushed the subway car” in an effort to free the man.
UPDATED 11/9 More from the Daily News. The victim was 51-year old Hun Li of Queens. Other passengers said he was “standing on the platform beside his wife when the Brooklyn-bound J train slammed his head:
Dozens of people rushed to Li’s aid, said witness Sharath Koorathota, 23. “Some people ran over and we were pushing, very uncoordinated. Meanwhile, the wife is crying. It was excruciating,” he recounted. Koorathota said the rescue effort took more than 40 people about five to 10 minutes.“When he came out, he was very, very, bloody. There was a huge square mark on his head from getting hit by the train,” Koorathota said.
