Earlier this month, a 29-year-old woman was slashed in the face at Delancey and Essex Street during a confrontation with a suspect shouting anti-gay slurs. The man, Takeam Brison, was charged with felony assault as a hate crime. He’s due back in court September 9. This evening, the Anti-Violence Project, an advocacy organization, and local elected officials are holding an outreach event at the same intersection.
Staff members from the group and City Council members Margaret Chin and Rosie Mendez will be handing out literature explaining what people can do if they experience or observe potential hate crimes. The event takes place from 6-7:30 p.m.
The victim, whose name was not released, was told by doctors that her face could be permanently disfigured because of the attack.
