Another longtime Lower East Side business is fleeing for the outer boroughs. Modern Decor, the fabric store that has operated for decades from 319 Grand St., has announced its relocation to Brooklyn. A sign in the window reads, “Moving sale, clearance on everything… fabric rolls, displays, etc.”
The store’s departure is not a surprise. Last summer, Waterbridge Capital and Continental Worsteds purchased the mixed-use building for $27 million. At the time, Crain’s reported the developers picked up the landmarked property at Grand and Orchard streets with an“eye toward converting (the buildings’) 11,200 square feet of ground floor retail space into high-end fashion boutiques and shops.” The commercial tenants all have short-term leases or cancellation clauses in their leases.
Modern Decor’s new address will be 291 Avenue S. We have a call into the business for more information.
