Breaking: Water Main Rupture Floods Extell’s LES Development Site

Must Read

It’s a big mess at the former Pathmark site on South Street, where Extell Development is preparing to build a 68-story luxury tower. Earlier today, a water main burst, flooding the parcel, which is also bordered by Pike Street and Cherry Street.

No word yet on what caused the rupture. Officials with the city’s Department of Environmental Protection are on the scene. The city plans to shut down water service in the area tonight at midnight to make repairs.

Extell has been in the final stages of demolishing the single-story Pathmark building.

  1. This is the first time they’ve experienced an issue with the water pipes since demolition work has began. I wonder what impacts this is having on residents of Two Bridges Towers, the Senior’s Residents and the Rutger’s Houses and surrounds. There’s likely to be questions regarding this at tonight’s meeting being held by Extell. Rutger’s Community Center, 200 Madison Street (corner of Rutger’s & Madison) @ 6:30pm.

  2. Correction: This is at least the third water issue since they started demolition. A month back, when they cut water to the Pathmark building, they somehow also cut water to the residential building next to it. It took a few hours to get it back on for the building and the sudden flow caused one of the water pipes in the lobby to pop. I’m pretty sure there was also either another incident or some construction-related work that caused them to cut the water again overnight.

This is just the beginning. Wait till they start messing with the electricity and gas and the digging starts bringing out the rats.
