Here’s more from Madison Street, near Oliver Street, where police say a man is refusing to leave his apartment after officers tried to take him into custody earlier today. According to news reports, the suspect, identified in some accounts as James Sider, was indicted in connection with the 2010 murder of a Pace University student. Cops went to a fourth floor apartment at the Smith Houses around 7:30 a.m., but the man refused to open the door. There are apparently three others in the apartment (including children and Sider’s wheelchair bound mother) but police are not calling them hostages. The suspect is not accused of murdering Pace student Max Moreno, but police say he was indicted as part of that case. Hostage negotiating teams are on the scene and numerous streets have been blocked off. Many local residents are being kept from entering their apartments. Thanks to @nyscanner for the first alert on this story this morning.
UPDATE (1:10 P.M.): The police have cleared the area and allowed residents to return to their apartments. Apparently the police have determined the suspect was not in the targeted apartment after all.
