Earlier in the week Crimestoppers put out a call for help in the search for a suspect wanted in a string of muggings on the Lower East Side stretching back to May. Yesterday, police arrested 38-year old Dion Whitehead in connection with the crimes. He lives at 484 East Houston Street.
Whitehead was charged with four counts of robbery. He has a number of previous arrests, including for attempted murder and drug charges, but an initial review of his record did not indicate whether he has been convicted of any felonies.
About half of the robberies happened near East River Park. The first mugging occurred May 5 at 205 Avenue C. The suspect swiped a necklace from a 59-year old woman. The robber also targeted people on FDR Drive, Grand Street, East Houston Street, Montgomery Street, East 10th Street, East 13th Street and 23rd Street. Most recently (July 27), he cornered two teens at 801 East 14th Street.
