Last week, the Local Spokes bicycling coalition gathered in the M’Finda Kalunga Garden to celebrate the release of a neighborhood “conceptual plan.” The coalition is made up of organizations such as Asian Americans for Equality, Good Old Lower East Side, Hester Street Collaborative and Transportation Alternatives. In the past year, Local Spokes conducted 1200 surveys and held many visioning events to craft a plan to increase the use of bicycles by people in diverse communities.
Many of their recommendations center around the city’s new bike share program. Among the group’s recommendations: adding bike share locations along the East River waterfront, extending discounts to low income communities and providing information in multiple languages. You can find out more about Local Spokes and the action plan on the organization’s web site.
