Word came yesterday that Elizabeth Hubbard, one of the dedicated leaders of the M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden, has died. The former co-chair of the garden (one of the Lower East Side’s treasures) and current treasurer, passed away at home, with her husband Joe at her side. Hubbard had been battling emphysema. On M’Finda Kalunga’s web site, there’s a post that reads:
“We lost a vital part of our garden’s heart… (Elizabeth was) an astonishing woman, a beautiful dancer, a gifted teacher and an unshakeable garden advocate. She was the most reliable and loyal of friends. Her wisdom was delivered in her unique style – direct and utterly honesty. To say we will miss her doesn’t begin to express this loss to us, and to our neighborhood.”
Hubbard’s friends will honor her in the garden this spring.
A huge loss for our neighborhood. One of the true gems of the lower east side.Â
Oh my God, we will miss such a wonderful and loving friend. I have known her since 1981. She was always a vital part of our neigborhood. Very dedicated and always with a smile for everyone. We will miss you Elizabeth!
