A fire broke out this afternoon on the top floor of 253 East Broadway (near Montgomery), a tenement building along historic Shtiebel Row. No one was hurt in the blaze and damage to the building didn’t appear too be too bad. The building’s owner suggested someone was doing unauthorized work inside an apartment. 
Last year, 251-253 Broadway, adjacent tenement buildings, were put on the market for $6 million. According to the Real Deal:
“The properties contain 21 apartments, and 253 East Broadway has a 1,000-square-foot retail unit that could be converted into a duplex with the vacant apartment directly above it. The 253 East Broadway property also has an additional 1,267 square feet of air rights for future development. Eight of the 21 residential units have been renovated.
