Fire Forces Evacuation of Building on East 4th Street

Must Read

A fire broke out inside the Village Farm and Grocery, 69 2nd Avenue (at 4th Street), this morning at about 4 o’clock.  According to WPIX, seven residents were treated for smoke inhalation. People who live in the apartments say the smoke woke them up before the fire alarms sounded. More details from Channel 11’s story:

While some residents climbed down the fire escape with the assistance of firefighters, others evacuated their apartment so quickly, they did not have time to put on shoes. Matt King, the owner of an across-the-street hangout spot Stillwater Bar and Grill, offered displaced residents shelter from the winter weather. As well, the Red Cross arrived to assist resident and give them blankets and shoes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
