Yesterday morning, a man was struck by a tour bus near the intersection of Essex and Canal. We happened to be passing by moments after the accident happened, around 1130am. The man was trapped underneath the Lucky Star Bus, which was stopped in the northbound lane of Essex, on the southwest corner of Seward Park.
It only took emergency crews a couple of minutes to arrive on the scene. They quickly rescued the victim, who appeared to have suffered injuries to both of his legs.
According to DNA Info, the man was transported to Bellevue Hospital, and according to Police, his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. The driver said he had waited for the pedestrian to cross Essex before making a left turn from Canal on to Essex. “I don’t know how he got under my bus,” the driver told DNA Info.
A reader/witness wrote into EV Grieve with more details.
This is another reason why this Yo! Bus stop approved by DOT will be dangerous. I remember this event since I had just moved to my apartment and witness the whole ordeal from my window. Essex is not wide enough to have a bus idling all the time near the intersection.
