Cyclist Struck on Essex Street

Must Read

According to DNA Info, a cyclist was struck by an SUV last night on Essex Street, near Rivington. Julie Shapiro and Jill Colvin report:

Shortly after the crash, police on the scene were seen questioning a man and a woman while an ambulance drove away. A black SUV sat with a shattered windshield just north of Rivington next to a bike on the ground. Police said they had no comment about the crash and the status of the cyclist is unknown at this time.

The accident happened a block away from Essex and Delancey, which is considered the most dangerous intersection in the neighborhood. Last month Community Board 3 member Harry Wieder was killed on Essex Street, a short distance away from this most recent accident. Also last month, a pedestrian died on Delancey Street, after being hit by a car.

At a recent community board meeting, Department of Transportation officials outlined plans to study traffic problems downtown. CB3 Chair Dominic Pisciotta and others urged them to include the dangerous Essex and Delancey intersection, which they’re not currently planning on doing.

We’ll have more on this latest accident as details become available.
