It’s going to be a busy night for members of Community Board 3’s transportation committee. As we reported earlier in the week, officials from the Department of Transportation will outline their plans for improved bicycle access to the Williamsburg Bridge. There will also be a separate presentation on new “traffic calming” measures on the Bowery, including a green center median.
According to a DOT flyer, the idea is to create safer pedestrian crossings and improve safety near the Manhattan Bridge. The impacted area is from Canal to East Broadway.
The area around the bridge has been plagued by many accidents over the years, some fatal. Organizations such as Transportation Alternatives, as well as community activists in Chinatown have been calling on the DOT to do something about the dangerous conditions.
The meeting takes place at 630pm, at University Settlement, 184 Eldridge Street (Rivington). You can download the DOT flyer here: Bowery What’s Happening.
