A former MIT professor and experimental filmmaker, Joseph Gibbons, pleaded guilty yesterday to robbing a Capital One bank at 115 Grand St., near Bowery, last winter. He’ll be spending a year in jail in exchange for the guilty plea. According to the Daily News, Gibbons will be sentenced July 13.
In an interview following the New Year’s Eve stunt, he said the robbery had been filmed as part of an art project. Gibbons also held up a bank in Providence, Rhode Island. At yesterday’s hearing, former student Maxim Pozdorovkin said of Gibbons, “He was idiosyncratic in the most charming of ways.”
About $1,000 was taken in the Lower East Side heist.
