Good Morning!

Scattered showers today with a high of 70. Thunderstorms possible through the week, but it’s going to be feeling a lot like summer. Look for a high in the low 80′s tomorrow. Continue reading Good Morning!

Groomed Gardens, Delighted Dogs, Tired Teenagers

Friends Seminary School sixth-graders (clockwise from left) Jayson Pitagorsky, 11, Kathryn McLane, 12, Jared Hodges, 12, and Jediah Katz, 11, got their hands dirty Saturday morning.

The weeds had a bad day, but everyone else at It’s My Park Day on the Lower East Side seemed to be enjoying themselves on Saturday.

Along the East River Promenade near Delancey Street, middle- and high-schoolers were hard at work pulling and digging unwelcome sprouts from among the flowers this morning, joking around and looking forward to a tall tower of pizzas that arrived by bicycle at lunchtime.

NYT: Move Would Disrupt “Delicate Ecology” of Essex Street Market

Ahead of Wednesday night’s discussion on the future of the Essex Street Market (Community Board 3/Land Use Committee), the Times ventures downtown to discover an “unlovely”  place where “bonds run deep.”

After taking a little abuse from the Shopsin clan, reporter Cara Buckley surveys merchants about the possibility that the market will be demolished and relocated, as part of the Seward Park redevelopment plan. “For the merchants, the prospect elicits an array of reactions, from dismay to denial to ambivalence,” she observes, adding:

What is certain is that a move would disrupt the delicate ecology of the place, where relationships among vendors have been forged, and forced, by close proximity and the simple fact that nearly every shop is essentially an open-air indoor stall.

We’ll have more on the upcoming meeting on Monday.  A neighborhood group, Save the Essex Street Market, has collected 1634 signatures on its online petition to preserve the 1940 market buildings

Steve Lewis: APL Really, Really Opens Tonight

First, there was the hype. And then the delays. Then the chef quit before she even started. Then there was some more hype. And then more delays. Finally, a preview party and a solid opening date. Then, a note on the door saying no, the opening was pushed back a week.

This afternoon, someone in a position to know says it really is so: APL, Orchard Street’s newest nightlife hotspot, will actually open tonight. Continue reading Steve Lewis: APL Really, Really Opens Tonight

DEAL OF THE WEEK: SUNNY 1 BEDROOM WITH NEW BATHROOM

EV and C’town Beer, Co-op Food & Drink, Free Scoops

The proposed brewery at 14 Ave. B went before CB3 this week, but made the news for other reasons.

Wrapping up the week in Friday food news:

  • The planned East Village Brewery and Beer Shop on Ave. B at 2nd Street got nailed for appropriating Prime Meats’ menu and then apologized.
  • Meanwhile, in other beer news, you can now get growlers at a Chinatown newsstand.
  • Co-op Food & Drink is getting a lot of love this week: Guest of a Guest has shots of the opening party, and Grub Street offers a peek at the menu.
  • Stellina, the new dessert palace on Allen Street, will offer free scoops of its homemade sorbet and gelato on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Another Judaica Store on Essex Closing after 60 Years

Israel Wholesale & Retail Judaica has been on Essex Street for six decades, most recently at No. 23.

The Lower East Side is losing another mainstay of its Jewish heritage.

“The people, they don’t come down here anymore,” Heidi Yousef says emphatically when asked why Israel Wholesale & Retail Judaica plans to close in the next few weeks. “We don’t have that many stores here; it’s not that interesting.” Continue reading Another Judaica Store on Essex Closing after 60 Years

Good Morning!

Ready for the weekend on Ridge Street near Stanton.

Today’s weather will be a lot like the rest of this week’s: foggy morning, damp showery afternoon with highs around 70. But the forecast for the weekend is considerably brighter, with partly sunny days and highs in the mid-70s. Perfect weather to get outside and participate in one of the many activities happening around the neighborhood as part of It’s My Park Day; check out our list. LoMA is putting on “Hair,” the musical, and Rooftop Films are showing.

Weekend Music Picks

Here are musician Ken Beasley’s top music picks on the Lower East Side for this weekend:

Jim Allen, David Cantor

JIM ALLEN & DAVID CANTOR – Fri., May 20 | 7:30PM at Googie’s Lounge

Jim Allen was born in New York and raised on a killer record collection. Heavily influenced by everyone from Leonard Cohen and the New York Dolls to Ernest Tubb and Patsy Cline, Allen is a truly unique songwriter with a one in a million baritone voice and a self-invented guitar tuning that’s as puzzling to the mind as it is pleasing to the ear.
David Cantor is instantly recognizable to many as the “Dave” in Dave’s True Story, the successful and highly respected jazz duo of the ’90s. In recent years, however Cantor has been stirring a caldron of all sorts of side projects, including various solo ventures and writing music for avant-garde theatre pieces. FREE // 154 Ludlow St.
