7th Precinct Crackdown Unpopular with Bar Owners

In the last couple of months, owners of Lower East Side bars and clubs say the 7th Precinct has gone on a major offensive — increasing their presence in the neighborhood’s party hot spots, shutting down numerous establishments and slapping fines on operators for a wide range of offenses.

Multiple bar owners, none of whom would allow their names to be used for this story, told us the crackdown is focusing on what they consider to be minor infractions, rather than more serious issues such as underage drinking, drugs or violence. Squadron Joins Koch at Midday Event

From this morning’s in-box: State Senator Daniel Squadron will be joining Ed Koch at a midday news conference to call on the Senate to make government reform its first order of business in the new legislative session.

Earlier this year, 53 out of 62 senators, including Squadron, signed Koch’s pledge to fight for ethics, budget and redistricting reform in Albany.  Squadron, who represents Lower Manhattan and sections of Brooklyn, has made ethics reform a major priority.

His counterpart in Albany, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, declined to sign the pledge (which has made Koch very cranky).

The news conference takes place at 12:15pm on the steps of City Hall.

Smashed on Saturday Night

One of those fancy new bus stop shelters on Grand Street took a serious beating last night, or early this morning. The Lo-Down’s Jennifer Strom snapped this photo a short time ago.  The glass on one side of the shelter, just to the east of Essex Street, was completely shattered. Anyone have more information about what happened here?

Firefighters Injured in Chinatown Blaze

Several firefighters were sent to the hospital last night, in the aftermath of a fire on Oliver Street in Chinatown. NY1 and Channel 7 filed brief reports on the blaze, saying the firefighters’ injuries were all relatively minor. The fire apparently was contained to the 4th and 5th floors of a tenement building near Chatham Square. No residents were hurt, but the Red Cross is helping several families with temporary housing. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SPURA Guidelines Call for “Relocating” Essex St Market

This photo is one of several historical images highlighted in a nice little slide show at the top of the Essex Street Market’s web site. The market, run by the city’s Economic Development Corp., is celebrating its 70th birthday this year.  But some people fear the future of this unique public institution could be in doubt.  This is because Community Board 3′s draft guidelines for the redevelopment of the Seward Park development site (of which the market is a part) call for its “relocation.” Continue reading SPURA Guidelines Call for “Relocating” Essex St Market

Two Community Boards Endorse Chinatown BID

A quick update on the campaign for a Chinatown Business Improvement District. Last night, Community Boards 1 and 2 gave their respective blessings to the proposal. The CB1 vote was unanimous, but the board was one short of a quorum (according to BID backers a quorum is not required). As expected, one member of CB2 (Soho activist Sean Sweeney) abstained. The resolution included language asking the BID steering committee to consider excluding the west side of Lafayette, between Grand and Broome, from the proposed business district. Chinatown BID Supporters Look for Community Board “Clean Sweep”

It’s a big night ahead for supporters of a Chinatown Business Improvement District.  This evening, Community Boards 1 and 2 will decide whether to accept their committee-level recommendations to endorse the proposal.  If they vote “yes”  and Community Board 3 does the same at its monthly meeting next week, it will be a clean sweep in the first phase of the arduous approval process.

In their campaign, the steering committee has said street maintenance and cleaning would be the organization’s top priority. A multi-million dollar grant for this purpose from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. runs out at the end of the year. This afternoon, BID backers said (if they win the support of all three boards) they will begin raising money for sanitation services for the first six months of the year.  Even under the best case scenario, the business district would not be functioning until the middle of 2011.  Continue reading Chinatown BID Supporters Look for Community Board “Clean Sweep”
