 Seward Park
A cool fountain might feel pretty good again today. We’re looking at partly cloudy skies and a high of 85, with a chance of thunderstorms tonight. This morning we’re headed over to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, where several Lower East Side buildings will be discussed. Also today, more on last night’s “game playing” at CB3, as community activists began to discuss housing on the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area.  Photo: LES Tenement Museum Tomorrow’s a big day for neighborhood activists intent on protecting one of the Lower East Side’s historic jewels, the Loew’s Canal Theater. Back in March, we covered an initial hearing of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. It looks all but certain the commissioners will vote to protect the theater’s facade. What do you do? Currently, I’m a stay-at-home dad with my 7-month-old son; he came along at the right time, just as I was opting out of a philosophy doctoral program and academic life. So I do funny faces, funny sounds, and more generally help him explore his place in the world. To keep busy with ‘more adult’ things, I’ve been volunteering with The Friends of Gulick Park and with the core-group developing The Lower East Side Food Co-op.

For many months, a task force trying to reach a community-wide consensus on the redevelopment of the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA) has steadfastly avoided a contentious issue. That issue – how much affordable housing should be built on the parcels (bulldozed in 1967) – will finally be addressed tonight. Members of CB3′s land use committee will take part in what’s sure to be a lively discussion — at University Settlement’s Speyer Hall (184 Eldridge Street), at 630pm. The conversation will be moderated by John Shapiro and Eva Baron, urban planners hired by the city to help facilitate an agreement. After leading an initial meeting in April, they have been conducting one-on-one interviews with various “stakeholders.” Now the time has come for the larger group to tackle the most controversial subjects.
Our friends at the Campos Plaza housing development asked us to help get the word out for their “End of the Year Festival,” taking place today from 1-7pm. There will be food, fun activities, carnival games, face painting, snow cones, cotton candy and music. Campos Plaza is located at 611 East 13th Street.  The greenmarket returned to the Lower East Side on a sultry Sunday -- setting up in a new location next to the Hester Street Fair. Mostly sunny today with a high of 89. Looks like our next chance of showers is on Wednesday. There’s an important Community Board 3 meeting tonight. At long last, the land use committee is tackling the contentious issue of affordable housing on the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area. Tomorrow the Landmarks Preservation Commission considers protecting part of the Loews Canal Theater. More on both stories coming up. For starters, several of the participants noted, in casual conversation, that it was nice to have something to celebrate. In this season of budget cuts and protests, community activists and city officials came together for an uplifting event.  Hillman Cooperative. Two Grand Street cooperatives, Hillman and Seward Park, elected new board members in the past several days. At Hillman – where State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver lives – incumbents were defeated for the first time in many years (possibly ever). Howard Stern and Pavel Lempert will be joining the Hillman board, replacing Chaim Lazar and Arleen Soberman.Two other incumbents, Judith Mitrani and Aaron From, were re-elected. We’ve just returned from the scene of that traffic accident at the intersection of Grand and Pitt streets. According to witnesses, a man on a motorcycle was riding the wrong way (southbound) on Pitt, a one-way street. He collided with a car that was making a left-hand turn from Pitt onto Grand.
