Reshma Saujani’s Debate Clock

Must Read

It’s a time honored dance in political campaigns. Challenger pressures incumbent to debate. Incumbent avoids committing for as long as possible.  Strongly worded press releases go back and forth. The combatants finally come to terms. Debate occurs. As the Democratic Primary race between Rep. Carolyn Maloney and challenger Reshma Saujani heats up, a new weapon has been deployed: a countdown clock!

Earlier this week, Saujani spokesperson James Allen lobbed the first grenade, saying there’s no reason for Maloney to dodge debates unless “she has something to hide.”  Now they’ve added a “countdown clock” to reshma2010.com, tracking the number of day/hours/minutes/seconds since Saujani first invited Maloney to debate.

The Maloney campaign’s response earlier in the week: “While the Congresswoman is creating jobs and working to get our economy back on track, her opponent is engaged in yet another political stunt that deflects from the issues the constituents really care about.”

Maloney represents the 14th Congressional District, which includes part of the Lower East Side. The primary is in September.
