LES Food Notes

Joshua Russ-Tupper of Russ & Daughters

WNYC talks with Russ & Daughters co-owner Joshua Russ Tupper about pickled herring: “Tupper has fond memories of being a child and facing an extensive fish spread at his grandmother’s house. He would pile all the different fish on a bagel smeared with cream cheese. At the top, he would carefully place a piece of pickled herring. Then his grandmother would scold him, saying that eating all the fish together ruined the individual flavors. Memories like that, and the idea of continuing the family business, brought the former chemical engineer back to the Lower East Side from the Northwest seven years ago.”

Second Act: the Dessert Truck is refashioned as a brick-and-mortar store on Clinton Street. Dessert Truck Works is officially open today.

The New City Council, Help For New Restaurants, the LES's Best Restaurants

Gotham Gazette has the complete list of committee chairmanships announced by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn yesterday. As we reported from City Hall, Councilmember Margaret Chin will chair the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Committee and serve on six other committees. Councilmember Rosie Mendez continues to chair the Public Housing Committee.

Ethics update: Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos says: “To suggest, as the Senate Democrats’ spokesman has, that the Senate will automatically override any governor’s veto is the height of arrogance.” The legislation, passed by both houses Wednesday, is sitting on Governor Paterson’s desk. He’s promised a veto – there are enough Democratic votes to override in the Assembly, but in the Senate, Republican support would be needed.

Local Officials Assess Moving Terror Trial From Lower Manhattan

The area around Park Row, closed since 9/11, would become an "armed camp" during the downtown terror trial.

There was some hope early yesterday that the upcoming 9/11 terror trial could be moved from Lower Manhattan. But by the time Police Commissioner Ray Kelly went on NY1 last night, the prospects for a new trial venue seemed to have dimmed. Recapping the events of the last few days:

  • On Tuesday, Kelly outlined plans to, as the Daily News put it, “turn most of Lower Manhattan into a heavily armed fortress.” He described a “hard perimeter” surrounding the courthouse (500 Pearl) with bomb squad officers and snipers — and a soft perimeter from the Bowery to Broadway, and from Franklin St. to Canal St.
  • Wednesday night, the executive committee of Community Board 1 called for moving the trial somewhere else. They suggested Governors Island might be a possibility. They planned a vote of the full board this coming Tuesday. Continue reading Local Officials Assess Moving Terror Trial From Lower Manhattan

Police Searching for LES Robber

According to the Village Voice, Police are looking for a suspect in at least four “strong-arm” robberies in Lower East Side housing projects.  The incidents happened December 26th at Campos Plaza (East 12th),  January 3rd at the Baruch Houses (Delancey), January 4th at the Lillian Wald Houses (FDR Drive) and January 5th at the projects on Catherine Slip. The woman seen in the surveillance video below is apparently a “helpful friend.” Police say the suspect is 5’10″ to 6′ tall, about 190 pounds, and has been seen wearing a black jacket with a skull-and-flames insignia on the left side. If you have information, call call (800) 577-TIPS (8477), visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, or text to CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577.

Quinn, Chin Statements on Relocating 9/11 Terror Trial

The City Council is taking a strong stand against holding the upcoming 9/11 terror trial in Lower Manhattan. In a statement released a short time ago, Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember Margaret Chin and Councilmember Peter Vallone urged the Federal government to find a new location. Earlier today, Chin was named chair of the Council’s Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Committee. See Quinn and Chin’s staements below:

Quinn: “While I support proactive efforts to relocate the 9/11 terror trials outside of Lower Manhattan and New York City all together, all viable
alternative options including holding the trials on Governors Island should be thoroughly explored. Not only did Lower Manhattan suffer on that tragic day but it suffered in the many weeks and months after as our city recovered. Further impacting New York City and Lower Manhattan to accommodate these trials is simply too large of a burden on New Yorkers and on our city’s resources.”
