The construction plywood on the north end of the Essex Market is hard to miss.
It signals the pending arrival of Cheeky Sandwiches, which ended its decade-long tenure at 35 Orchard St. in January after what was described on the restaurant’s Instagram as, “a bad case of the landlords.”
The New Orleans-inspired sandwich shop will be taking over a large space, previously occupied by Harlem Shambles and Valley Shepherd Creamery. The construction shed is a little overwhelming, so it’s worth mentioning that neighboring businesses – including Essex Olive and Spice and Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery — remain open for business!
While we’re mentioning new arrivals at the Essex Market, here’s one more. Chomps Élysées will be opening soon in the former Peasant Stock soup counter space, next to Top Hops. It will offer sandwiches, soups, “big tasty vegetable dishes, (and) sweet treats.”
