Here are a few suggestions for local happenings that are on our radar:
- Visit the recently completed project, Collective Photo Album (many images of us alone, together), on the exterior windows of Essex Market at the corner of Norfolk and Broome Streets. A 2021 commission between Artists Alliance Inc and NY-based artist Jennifer M. Harley, in which she collaborated with students at P.S. 134 at the height of COVID-19 and in the midst of the City’s lockdown.
- Catch a free conversation and book talk, Coenties Slip: Changing American Art, on the Southstreet Seaport’s ship, Wavertree, on August 2, 2023 at 6pm, celebrating the release of The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever. Author Prudence Peiffer will join moderator Ada Calhoun to capture this defining moment in American art.
- Check out The Debutante Hour’s latest music at Joe’s Pub with their EP Release party on Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00pm. The “compulsively-harmonizing, accordion/cello/uke girl band’s latest release of The Citrus Suite includes songs inspired by John McPhee’s book, Oranges.
- Learn the Bomba — Ivelisse Diaz, director of La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón and all-women Bomba y Plena group Las BomPleneras, is teaching a free dance workshop at the Loisaida Center on Thursday, August 3rd from 7–9pm.
- The Nuyorican Poets Café takes over Late Night ICP, on Thursday, August 10th from 6 – 9pm, for an evening celebrating their poets and words inspired by ICP’s current photo exhibition, Love Songs: Photography and Intimacy. Following the in-gallery program will be a “Poems of Love” Open Mic.
