Here are some upcoming events that are on our radar:
- Check out one of three screenings of the experimental/comedy/documentary/mystery Kim’s Video, screening at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on Tues., Weds, and Fri. The film is getting mixed reviews but the real life story of the beloved, shuttered East Village video store is too bizarre to pass up.
- As part of the annual River to River Festival, Antonio Ramos and The Gangbangers present CEREMONIA, a free dance-theatre performance at The Clemente on Thursday, June 15th at 8:00pm. “In a mixed-tape Latino extravaganza of cultural misappropriation and reappropriation, Ramos calls on his ancestors and carries the audience on a journey to the bottom of the ocean and back again. This piece is a ceremony.”
- On Saturday, June 17th, six independent bookstores on Manhattan’s Lower East Side will celebrate by offering discounts, special giveaways, and curated selections of queer books as part of the Lower East Side Pride Book Crawl from noon to 7:00pm. Joining Bluestockings Cooperative is: Book Club Bar, a cozy bookshop also offering wine and beer; Sweet Pickle Books, a wonderfully quirky shop that honors the neighborhood’s history of pickling by selling pickles in addition to used books; Yu and Me Books, the first female Asian-American owned bookstore in NYC located in Manhattan’s Chinatown; Printed Matter/St. Mark’s, a mainstay in the neighborhood offering a wide selection of art books; and P&T Knitwear, a bookstore and podcast studio that opened just last year.
- Celebrate Juneteenth at M’Finda Kalunga Garden on Sunday, June 18th, from 12pm-3pm at the longest running Juneteenth celebration in the Lower East Side. Featuring music, art, poetry, activities, and food, you can also meet artist Emmanuel Oni and learn more about his vision for the Chrystie Street African Burial Ground memorial project.
- New York Theatre Workshop & Poetics Theatre host an Open Salon for original music, songs, poetry, spoken word, story-telling, drag, and all forms of performance on Thursday, June 18th, from 5pm – 7pm on East 4th Street btween 2nd & Bowery.
