Here are a few local happenings that are on our radar:
- The 36th Annual Loisaida Festival takes place this Sunday, May 28th from 12p – 5p, along Avenue C, between 5th St. and 12th St. The beloved event is a celebration of the city’s Latinx community, and the neighborhood’s legacy of art and activism. Festivities include live music and theatre, food vendors, environmental justice and science education activities in a BioBus and Listening Lab, community mural painting project, basketball games, a bouncy house, and pony rides, to name a few.
- P&T Knitwear celebrates its first anniversary this weekend with ongoing activities starting on Friday May 26th at 12:00p – Sunday May 28th, at 8:00p. Events include a community raffle, promos and giveaways, podcast studio tours (the bookstore is home to NYC’s only free community podcast recording studio) and an official anniversary toast with “cupcakes for everyone.”
- Chatham Square Library welcomes author Delia Cai to the May installment of Talking Books: Asian American Authors in Conversation to discuss her debut novel, Central Places, on Wednesday, May 24, 6:30-7:30p, in the Chatham Square Library, 3rd Floor Community Room.
- Dixon Place premieres a new incarnation of Club Dada/Kabaret Kaput!, created & performed by Ellen Foley (“Paradise by the Dashboard Light”) & Robert I Rubinsky (original Bway cast of Hair) on Wednesday, May 24 & Thurs, May 25 at 7:30p.
- Local artist Laura Nova hosts a drop-in “Plant Wisdom” cyanotype and book-making workshop on Saturday, June 3, from 11am – 2pm, at M’Finda Kalunga garden at 179 Chrystie Street. The photographic printing process uses a mixture of iron compounds, which when exposed to UV light and washed in water, oxidizes and creates Prussian Blue images. Participants can create garden journals and share stories of communal healing properties.
