In the news this past week:

–The owner of a Lower East Side building, 67 Pitt St., received more than $200,000 from the city to pay rent for 11 formerly homeless individuals. Now that the city funding has expired, the landlord has filed to evict all of them. [Gothamist]

–A report from the Rent Guidelines Board finds more rent stabilized buildings in financial decline, prompting landlord groups to call for double digit rent increases. [The City]

–The city’s exterior design proposal for 71 Mulberry St., ravaged by fire three years ago, won support from Community Board 3. The building was home to five local nonprofit groups, who will return to the facility after reconstruction. [NY1]

–A state judge has cleared the way for a development site, 171 Bowery, to be sold at auction. [The Real Deal]

–In the latest chapter in the saga over CHARAS and the former P.S. 64, developer Gregg Singer has filed for bankruptcy, just before the building was scheduled to go up for auction. [New York Post]

–Community Board 3’s April meeting agendas. On April 11, the transportation committee will receive an informational update from the Essex Crossing developers regarding the future of two desolate pedestrian plazas on the south side of Delancey Street. [CB3]

–Colette Veasey-Cullors has been selected to serve as the next dean of the International Center of Photography. [The Art Newspaper]

–Photographer Tria Giovan documented the Lower East Side in the 1980s, at a time when she was living in a tenement on Clinton Street. Her photos sat in boxes for years, until recently and now she has published,”Loisaida: New York Street Work 1984-1990.” [i-D]

–Ankara Turkish Restaurant, from the former owner of the beloved Lower East Side spot Bereket (forced to close in 2014), has opened at 183 East Houston St., just across the street from the old Bereket location. [EV Grieve]
