Anonymous street artist royalty, Banksy, has returned to NYC after a 5 year hiatus with a Bowery Wall takeover that he’s utilizing to draw attention to the controversial incarceration of Zehra Doğan, the Turkish journalist and artist who was jailed for painting a watercolor of a photo of a war-torn city. On his Instagram, Banksy features the painting and notes: “One year ago Zehra Dogan was jailed for painting this watercolor of a photograph she saw in the newspaper. Protest against this injustice by re-gramming her painting and tagging Turkey’s President Erdogan @rterdogan #FREEzehradogan” The mural is a collaboration with the graffiti artist Borf, who has spent time in jail for his work. Last night, an image of the painting was projected above the wall. Another Banksy piece, pointing to the same political act, has been spotted on the old bank building on 14th Street and 6th Avenue. Keep your eye out for more to come!
