On the Lower East Side in 2017, 3 Murders But a Slight Uptick in Sexual Assault

At the end of 2017, crime in New York City fell to levels not seen since the 1950s. There were 290 murders in the five boroughs last year — in comparison to more than 2,000 murders recorded annually through the early 1990s. We wanted to check on the picture throughout the Lower East Side. Here’s the snapshot in the 7th, 5th and 9th precincts.

There were three murders in the neighborhood last year, all in the 9th Precinct (that’s the area above East Houston Street). In 2016, there were 5 murders in the 9th and none in the 5th and 7th precincts. There were 32 rapes in 2017, up slightly from the previous year. The community saw 322 robberies and 562 felony assaults, both categories down from 2016.

9th Precinct – 120 (154 in 2016)

Felony Assault
7th Precinct – 178 (148 in 2016)
5th Precinct – 206 (183 in 2016)
9th Precinct – 178 (148 in 2016)

Back in 1990, the three precincts had a combined murder count of 60.
