Nonna’s Pizza is Closed While Owner Tries to Work Out Lease, Renovation Issues

Must Read

You may have noticed that Nonna’s Pizza (105 Clinton St.} has been closed in recent days. There’s a sign on the front door indicating that renovations will be taking place and the restaurant’s voice mail reveals that the popular pizza spot will remain closed for the month of January.

We contacted Nonna’s owner, Leon Leandru, to find out what’s happening. It is true that renovations are required, but there’s another more immediate issue. In the overheated Manhattan real estate market, he told us, the restaurant’s lease isn’t being renewed. Leandru said he’s continuing talks with the building owner to renew the lease, complete renovations and to reopen. Leandru asked us to pass along how appreciative he has always been of Nonna’s loyal customers.

The restaurant is a Lower East Side favorite — a place definitely focused on feeding the local community. A few years ago, our readers picked Nonna’s as their favorite pizza in the neighborhood.  Nonna’s opened in 2008.

We’ll keep you posted.
