Police are looking for several men who pistol whipped and robbed a victim inside an apartment at the Alfred E. Smith Houses early Sunday morning.

The incident happened at 182 South Street at around 3 a.m. Cops say a male resident of the apartment heard a knock at his door. When he answered, four masked men burst inside. They beat him and tore through the apartment, stealing money and electronics. The resident was not badly hurt; he refused medical attention.

The victim, 47, told Channel 2, “I feel safe — everyone should be ok… Things happen, you know.”

UPDATE 10:31 a.m. Here’s a statement on the incident from State Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou:

Neighborhood safety is of the utmost importance, which is why this weekend’s attack and robbery in a Lower East Side apartment was simply unacceptable. Per reports, multiple individuals broke into a tenant’s apartment, beat him, and robbed him – all of which occurred past midnight inside a large complex that houses families, children and seniors. I call on the NYPD to bring a swift investigation into Sunday’s robbery at Smith Houses, and I urge NYCHA as the landlord to close any security gaps that could prevent these types of violent attacks at residents’ homes in the future. I look forward to working with tenants, my colleagues and the community towards ensuring the security of our lower Manhattan families is protected.
