Galerie Perrotin has announced an opening date for it’s huge new gallery in the Beckenstein Building at 130 Orchard St.
The five-level, 25,000 square foot space will debut April 27 with the opening of an exhibition by Colombian-born artist Iván Argote on the ground floor of the fully renovated historic former warehouse building. Perrotin has represented Argote since 2009. It is his third solo show with the gallery.
Perrotin is relocating from the Upper East Side, its New York City headquarters for the past three years. The gallery also has locations in Paris, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo. In announcing the move last summer, Perrotin called the Lower East Side New York’s “most dynamic arts neighborhood.”
The renovation has been overseen by the architectural firm P.R.O. – Peterson Rich Office. On the firm’s website, it notes, “The new gallery will be the largest on the Lower East Side of New York City, representing a dramatic shift in the neighborhood from small storefront exhibitions, to museum scale, multi programmed, mega-galleries.” According to P.R.O., there are several distinct exhibition spaces, offices, a bookstore, a cafe and residences.
130 Orchard St. was built in 1902. Beckenstein Fabrics occupied the building until 1999, when it relocated to West 20th Street. Delshah Capital purchased 130 Orchard St. for $28 million in 2015.
The opening reception on April 27 will take place from 5-8 p.m.
