Crime on the Lower East Side in 2016: 6 Murders, 12 Shootings

At a news conference in Brooklyn today, Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD crowed about their successes fighting crime in the past year. There were 998 shootings citywide in 2016, the fewest number since at least 1994. There were 335 murders last year, compared with 352 in 2015.

Here’s a look at the year in crime on the Lower East Side. We scanned crime stats in the three precincts that make up Community District 3. There were six murders, up from just two killings the previous year. There were 12 shootings, up slightly from 2015. The big crime on the Lower East Side: Grand larceny. Those high numbers are driven by thefts of personal property from visitors to the neighborhood’s many nightlife establishments.

7th Precinct

Murder: 1 (compared with 0 in 2015)
Shootings: 4 (compared with 2 in 2015)
Rape: 17 (compared with 9 in 2015)
Robbery: 126 (compared with 105 in 2015)
Felony assault: 147 (compared with 142 in 2015)
Burglary: 54 (compared with 82 in 2015)
Grand larceny: 429 (compared with 401 in 2015)

9th Precinct

Murder: 5 (compared with 1 in 2015)
Shootings: 8 (compared with 6 in 2015)
Rape: 11 (compared with 19 in 2015)
Robbery: 149 (compared with 133 in 2015)
Felony assault: 177 (compared with 127 in 2015)
Burglary: 106 (compared with 133 in 2015)
Grand larceny: 948 (compared with 870 in 2015)

5th Precinct

Murder: 0 (compared with 1 in 2015)
Shootings: 0 (compared with 2 in 2015)
Rape: 7 (compared with 11 in 2015)
Robbery: 99 (compared with 96 in 2015)
Felony assault: 183 (compared with 164 in 2015)
Burglary: 76 (compared with 85 in 2015)
Grand larceny: 10 (compared with 21 in 2015)
