Lower East Side Young Historians Unveil Catherine Street Signs

Must Read

During the past few years, we’ve been following an innovative program at P.S. 126/Manhattan Academy of Technology on Catherine Street. Lower East Side Young Historians is a curriculum devised by teachers Alfonso Guerriero, Jr. and Christopher Piccigallo. It’s meant to bring American history alive through the rich stories of the neighborhood surrounding the school.

On Friday, the kids unveiled two new historic signs on Catherine Street. They’re now part of the New York City Parks Department’s Historic Signs Project. City Council member Margaret Chin and State Sen. Daniel Squadron looked on as the kids cut the ribbon (the signs you see above are temporary; more permanent signage will be installed later).

You can see the text researched and written by the students. Last year, we published two stories on a remarkable discovery by the Young Historians — uncovering the roots of tap dancing on the Lower East Side. You can read those articles here and here.
