At tonight’s 7th Precinct Community Council meeting, Captain Steven Hellman will be talking about a rash of incidents that have occurred in the past several days on the Lower East Side.

Last week, a woman was assaulted outside 510 Grand St. (near Columbia Street) by a group of boys believed to be between 12 and 15. A similar incident happened at Grand Street near Henry Street. The victim was also a woman, an innocent bystander. The two assaults happened about 10 minutes apart.

At the same time, police are investigating three cell phone thefts in the same general area. They believe the teens responsible for the assaults might also be the culprits in at least two of the phone snatchings. The most recent crime happened on Monday. They’ve all occurred in the early evening hours.

Hellman called the assaults random acts because the attackers have not taken any personal items. So far, police have not been able to compile good descriptions of the suspects. Police are talking to building managers on Grand Street about providing security camera footage.

If you’d like to attend tonight’s meeting, it begins at 7:30 p.m. at the 7th Precinct, 19 Pitt Street.
